Forwards and Faster
04:14
|
|
||
first got 2 wheels when i was 3
opened up a whole new world to me
didn't pedal fast
didn't think of racing
because I could go anywhere
see anything
slowly the road got bigger
watched people move
like they ignited off a trigger and
where else do you go
when forwards and faster
is all you know
for someone who thinks so much
about what he's going to get
you think I'd check
that all this speed
is in fact a safe bet
the wheels are breaking
slow down, slow down
why am I racing?
slow down, slow down
I used to like to build a fort
decked out with booby traps
so the baddies got caught
it was just a blanket on a table
but I'd defend that thing
from anything
as long as i was able
and if you wanted to be my friend
you were straight in
and it was you and me
together until the end
where did that go?
because I still fight
but these days I
choose to fight alone
for someone who thinks so much
about what he's going get
you'd think I'd check
that all alone
was such a safe bet
the wheels are breaking
slow down, slow down
why am I racing?
slow down, slow down

Run You Down
05:08
|
|
||
I never answer my phone
I like to watch it ring
but the voicemail
doesn't always get through
so I always took calls from you
I always answered you
and I've not got much of a memory
so beware of your wish
cause my face at a place and a time
may not come true
but I never forgot you
I never forgot you
I'm leaving now
and I'm running
I'm leaving now
I'm going to run you down
I've got a funny way of looking
I only see parts
as the wasteful world of what if
keeps filling my view
but I always went looking for you
I always sought out you
and I know I'm pretty bad at asking
when I know I need help
so I perish in the woods
one man trying to cut his way through
but I know I need help from you
the truth is that
I need you
I'm leaving now
and I'm running
I'm leaving now
I'm going to run you down

Chasing the Wind
06:17
|
|
||
all we need is a little place
of our own
all we need is a little space
to call home
all we need is a little time
all alone
to see through the dark
and so it starts
all we need is a little bit
more
all I need is what I didn't have
before
all I need is a slightly higher score
to win my share
to make it fair
I never believed in money
I never wanted power
but here I find myself
building a rich man's tower
roll up
come see the man
who's chasing after the wind
see I know how to move quick
but I don't know where I'm going
roll up
come see the man
who's chasing after the wind
I'm not joking I have no idea
no idea where I am
no idea where I am
all I wanted was a chance
my own way through
all I wanted was a role at pace
at the front of the race
where I turn into the one
they turn to
to make that risky call
to a nod from an old man
who has seen it once before
and sensed that change in the air
that would play
that the stories would say
that he stood up
with an empty hand in the air
I never believed in money
I never wanted power
but here I find myself
defending a rich man's tower
roll up
come see the man
who's chasing after the wind
see I know how to move quick
but I don't know where I'm going
roll up
come see the man
who's chasing after the wind
I'm not joking I have no idea
no idea where I am
no idea where I am
if I'm a sailor
in the making
then you are a lighthouse
of safety
well I'm a sailor
forsaking
set fire to the mast
I'll go where it takes me
I'll go where it takes me
I never believed in money
I never wanted power
but here I find myself
dying on a rich man's tower
roll up
come see the man
who's chasing after the wind
see I know how to move quick
but I don't know where I'm going
roll up
come see the man
who's chasing after the wind
I'm not joking I have no idea
no idea where I am
no idea where I am

Some Day
04:12
|
|
||
you see them sometimes
through the lies
you can sense it
with the best
with steady eyes on the horizon
and certain steps through the mess
if you listened close
you will have heard
their secret song of common words
that match the crest
on their sleeves and on their chest
they sing
ohh we will keep marching on
ohh with voices in song
ohh we will keep marching on
until we're gone
until we're gone
we know the whistle in the wind
will refuse to make a deal
it betrays who it can find
and takes what it can steal
as epidemic as the night
we all feel it just the same
growing colder until it bites
at the ears
and the jugular vein
I never thought
it would be this hard
it would draw this blood
it would take this long
unless something fundamental
had gone deeply wrong
but we carry it on our backs
either way
however we play the curse
arranging scars into words
of a final broken verse
ohh we will keep marching on
ohh with voices in song
ohh we will keep marching on
until we're gone
until we're gone
some day you'll
want to be
want to be
something and
some day you'll
want to be
want to be
someone
some day you'll
want to go
want to go
somewhere
some day you'll
want to be
you'll want to be something more

Where's My Place
06:27
|
|
||
a little boy
kind of like a little man
except that he still knows that he can
slay the knight to win the fight
and set the sky alight
before he's done
but a boy meets his own countrymen
from whom he learns
how he is lesser than the best
he must be ruthless
sign a long list
and then queue up for a test
when this started
a long long time ago
there wasn't much of a plan
but now that I've spent that time
inching
inching away
we're on different land
wondering
where is my home now?
where's my place?
where is my home now?
you can see I'm lost
you can see I'm lost
you can see I'm lost
you can see it in my face
I started thinking about the dark
where it ends
and whre it starts
how it creeps in from the corners
and gently runs our vision apart
and then I thought about the heart
and how we never quite kill that spark
though it's beaten
it still beats
though it's cold and old
it seeks still it's place
still it's part
when this started
a long long time ago
there wasn't much of a plan
but now that I've spent that time
inching
inching away
we're on different land
wondering
where is my home now?
where's my place?
where is my home now?
you can see I'm lost
you can see I'm lost
you can see I'm lost
you can see it in my face
why do I run still
when I'm already so far away?
why do I worry in the night
if I'm so skeptical of day?
did you ever feel like when you fell
you got back up somewhere else?
like gravity was pulling you on
as if something was steering us
home
when this started
a long long time ago
there wasn't much of a plan
but now that I've spent that time
inching
inching away
we're on different land
wondering
where is my home now?
where's my place?
where is my home now?
you can see I'm lost
you can see I'm lost
you can see I'm lost
you can see it in my face

Robot
04:59
|
|
||
I wish I was a robot
so I could stick to my guns
I would lock in the rules
so that when things got awkward
I wouldn't run
but your heart it only skews you
and your brain gets int he way
I talked my way out
a couple of times
as a kid
and then I stayed that way
they say
that's not how you learn
and it's not how big things happen no
it's not how it goes
God knows
I want to let go tonight
but something got me
something's gripping me tight
I want to let go tonight
but I'm not sure I'm ready
for the fight
robot knees are solid
robot eyes are straight
the metal stomach won't knot up
when the sea turns dark
and the sharks hunt prey
but I'm drawn towards the easy
I'm pulled towards the safe
I know that dirty feeling you get
from sucking down the little poisons
that hide you away
they say
that's not how you learn
and it's not how big things happen
it's not how it goes
God knows
I want to let go tonight
but something got me
something's gripping me tight
I want to let go tonight
but I'm not sure I'm ready
for the fight
we're made to push
designed to cling
we're wired for pressure
to need that sting
to stay always in our legs
it needs to hurt
to hang by a thread
the engine runs on blood bled
from hands
worn back through the skin
they say
it's not how you learn
and it's not how big things happen no
and it's not how it goes
God knows
I want to let go tonight
but something's got me
something's gripping me tight
I want to let go tonight
but I'm not sure I'm ready
for the fight
I want to let go tonight
but something's got me
something's blocking the light
I want to let go tonight
but I'm not sure I'm ready
for the fight

there's a boy who's a kite
when the wind blows you might
see him flying
he doesn't care
though he's made for the skies
when the wind dies
there's nothing to keep him
up in the air
so this kite when he falls
you can watch as he stalls
and he starts to lose control
as he's tumbling down
he aims straight for the ground
and he splits when he hits
right down
is he so bound by circumstance
that every week he needs
another second chance
where are you going tonight?
what do you have planned
for when the day drains out of light?
where will you be?
if you don't care
you'll end up there again
guaranteed
though he hits like a kite
there's a sense that he might
have been wired up first as a bird
that his parts unaware
in the weight of the air
for the wings of a creature
we've not yet seen
but the pull of the string
and the flutter
and the swing
in the air
make it hard to be sure
so he aims for the cracks
when he falls
because paper and wax
deserves nothing more
it deserves nothing more
I think that you'll be fine
no that's a lie
but you'll be fine enough
for now
and isn't that all we need?
the present tense
and the confidence to bluff
out loud
is he so bound by circumstance
that every week he needs
another second chance
is he so bound by circumstance
that every week he needs
another second chance
where are you going tonight?
what do you have planned
for when the day drains out of light?
where will you be?
if you don't care
you'll end up there again
if you don't care
you'll end up there again
guaranteed
